Collection Requirements

Source: tissue
Container: sterile cup

Source: fluid or pus
Container: sterile syringe or eSwab

Source: wound, abscess, or lesion
Container: eSwab

Decontaminate the surrounding skin then open the lesion and express pus onto eSwab
Sample the advancing margin of the lesion

Label the specimen as to the source of the wound (i.e. incision, burn, dog bite, etc.)
One swab may be submitted for multiple cultures (example- Aerobic, Anaerobic, Fungal, AFB from the same site)

Tissue: refrigerate if not processed within 1 hour of collection
