Collection Restrictions

Do not inoculate body fluid into blood culture bottles

Collection Requirements

Sources: abdominal fluid, ascites, bile, paracentesis, pericardial fluid, pleural fluid, synovial fluid, or thoracentesis
Container: sterile syringe or cup

  • Use a Sodium heparin green tube if the specimen may clot (EDTA is unacceptable for cultures)
  • Obtain specimen via percutaneous needle aspiration or surgery
  • Sterile skin decontamination required (Iodine or Chloraprep process)
