Collection Restrictions
Do not inoculate body fluid into blood culture bottles
Collection Requirements
Sources: abdominal fluid, ascites, bile,
paracentesis, pericardial fluid, pleural fluid, synovial
fluid, or thoracentesis
Container: sterile syringe or cup
- Use a Sodium heparin green tube if the specimen may clot (EDTA is unacceptable for cultures)
- Obtain specimen via percutaneous needle aspiration or surgery
- Sterile skin decontamination required (Iodine or Chloraprep process)
