Collection Requirements
Source: products of conception
Container: sterile cup or tube with sterile transport medium or sterile saline
- For early pregnancy loss (12 weeks or less), send the entire sac
- For pregnancy loss (>12 weeks), collect chorionic villi or chorion,fetal membranes, rib cartilage, muscle, tendon, or skin; keeping each speicmen type type in separate containers
- If the specimen is from a stillborn, 2-3 mL blood in a Sodium heparin green and chorion is preferred
- If an autopsy is not being performed, a small section of underarm skin with dermal tissue should be collected after cleansing the skin with alcohol, followed by sterile saline. A 1 cm3 piece of skin should be obtained.
Special Instructions
- Transport at room temperature; avoid fluctuating temperatures (hot or cold)
- Specimen must be processed within 24 hours of collection

Indications for testing: History of multiple spontaneous abortions without evidence of a clear reason for loss of pregnancy; Previous pregnancy or family history of a chromosome abnormality; patient carrying a known translocation
