Algorithm

This test is a screen for HIV infection. Samples will be analyzed for antibody and antigen determination (HIV-1 infection and/or HIV-2 infection). Positive screens will be sent to Mayo for confirmatory testing.

Mayo confirmatory testing (HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibody testing):

  • If positive the CMH screen is confirmed and no further testing is done on this specimen. Nucleic acid testing for viral load is recommended, and should be ordered on a new specimen.
  • If antibody determination is negative or indeterminate, nucleic acid testing is automatically reflexed.
    • Nucleic acid testing results will either be undetected (negative) or give a number of copies/mL (positive.)
    • If nucleic acid testing is reflexed, both the antibody determination and the nucleic acid testing will be resulted at the same time
